Powerful Drilling, Driving, and FasteningWith enough power to rival professional automotive wrenches, the WH18DL has an industrial-grade two-piece motor that features heavy-gauge copper coils for maximum power and long-lasting performance. And you know the WH18DL will pack a punch: it delivers an impact rate of up to 3,200 BPM, a no-load variable speed of 0-2,600 RPM, and up to 1,330 in./lbs. of torque. For ultimate control, a unique two-step speed switch allows you to select between two power settings: Power Mode (0-2,600 RPM) and Save Mode (0-2,000 RPM).

With all that power, you have to keep things cool. Thankfully, Hitachi's unique cool flow technology sends a steady stream of air to the motor, which enables the impact to run harder and longer than most impact drivers without risking burnout.

Full of User-Friendly FeaturesLike all Hitachi tools, the WH18DL is full of features that were designed with the user in mind. To start, a non-slip Elastomer grip keeps you in complete control of the tool and provides comfort for all-day jobs. What's more, the driver weighs only 3.5 pounds, so it is extremely easy to maneuver and transport. A patented five-position belt hook with integrated LED offers easy portability, as well as illumination in dimly lit areas.

For further convenience, the WH18DL features a quick-change bit system that makes changing drill bits as easy as can be. The 1/4-inch hex chuck requires no tools for bit changes--simply pull out, insert the bit, and release the chuck. An added bonus, integrated storage right on the tool holds two additional bits.

Additionally, the WH18DL is fitted with externally accessible carbon brushes and replaceable armature for easy maintenance and longer overall life.

HXP Batteries Last Three Times Longer and Weigh 50% LessThe WH18DL owes its light weight to two HXP Lithium-Ion batteries (included). These 3.0-Ah batteries weigh half of what traditional NiCd or NiMH batteries weigh. In fact, tools featuring HXP batteries are on average one pound lighter than tools using traditional batteries.

Additionally, HXP batteries last three times longer than their competition. Where NiCd and NiMH batteries could be used for up to 500 charge cycles, HXP Lithium-Ion batteries can be used for up to 1,500 charge cycles! An added bonus, the included quick charger replenishes the battery power in just 40 minutes, so you have less down time.

HXP Lithium-Ion batteries operate within optimal voltage limits, protecting both the tool and batteries from damage. Protection circuitry built into the batteries and charger monitors the charge and discharge for each battery cell, resulting in peak operating performance.

And if a surge in power is detected during use, Hitachi's Over-Current Protection technology will temporarily shut of the power to protect the batteries and tool from being damaged. This feature allows the power to return to optimal voltage, thereby extending battery and tool life beyond any competitive lithium-ion products.

HXP batteries come with a two-year HXP Lithium-Ion Battery Warranty, which protects against possible defects in materials and workmanship.

The Industry's Longest Lithium-Ion Tool WarrantyEvery Hitachi cordless power tool is designed to the highest standards and is rigorously tested for both performance and durability. All HXP Lithium-Ion cordless tools come with a Lifetime Lithium-Ion Tool Warranty, which protects against possible defects in materials and workmanship.

Impact drivers, unlike drills, have a spring-loaded, quick-release chuck that accepts ¼-inch hex shank driver bits. They are designed to drive wood and sheet metal screws, but they can also turn a bolt when equipped with an impact-rated socket. They can drive fasteners more quickly than a cordless drill and their compactness makes them easier to handle, especially in a tight spot or when you're standing on a ladder. They drive and remove by applying concussive, rotational force to the screw or bolt head. It can deliver significantly more torque than a drill and will be less likely to twist your wrist when the fastener stops or binds.

When you add an impact driver to your arsenal, you'll need some impact-rated ¼-inch hex bits. Plain ¼-inch hex bits typically used in a drill/driver may not hold up to use in an impact driver. These bits are designed specifically for use with impact drivers.

Power: 12-volt | Motor: Brushless | RPM: 3300 | IPM: 3550 | Torque: 1300 in.lbs.

The M12 Fuel was capable of driving every fastener the 18- and 20-volt drivers did, including 3/8' x 3' lag bolts, without a pilot hole. Not an ideal task for this driver, but it got the job done. Two inches shorter than most drivers, with a compact head, the M12 Fuel is a great tool to use in tight places. A single LED works to light those places when dark. We liked the easy-to-use speed/mode selector on the top of the tool, with three speeds and a self-tapping fastener mode. Self-tapping mode starts slower to prevent walking, and then backs off as the screw finishes seating. The M12 Fuel is a contractor-quality tool, built to hold up to daily use.

Kit includes: Impact driver, two 2.0Ah batteries, charger, and a hard case.
Warranty: Limited, 5-year on the driver, 2-years free service on the battery.

  • Compact and light.
  • One-handed chuck makes changing bits easy.
  • Initially, tool balance felt different than others
DEWALT

Power: 20-volt | Motor: Brushless | RPM: 3250 | IPM: 3600 | Torque: 1825 in.lbs.

DeWalt's 20V MAX XR, with 1825 inch pounds of torque and big 4.0Ah batteries, is a contractor-quality tool capable of driving large lag bolts. We appreciated using the simple, mechanical switch to click between the three power settings to make matching the power to the job easy. The one-handed chuck worked reliably, and bit changes went smoothly. It has three LED lights spaced evenly around the chuck that illuminate the work area without dark spots or shadows. This kit can also be purchased with 2.0Ah batteries for $200.

Kit includes: Impact driver, two 4.0Ah batteries, charger, and a hard carrying/storage case.
Warranty: Limited, 3-year on the driver with 1-year free service, 3-years free service on the battery.

  • Three LEDs to light up the work area.
  • Lots of torque.

Power: 20-volt | Motor: Brushed | RPM: 2900 | IPM: n/a | Torque: 1300 in.lbs.

Harbor Freight, known for bargain tools, has invested a fair amount of effort developing higher-quality options. Its Bauer Hypermax impact driver is a good example of what they have accomplished. A variable-speed trigger controls driving speed and torque from 0 to 2,900RPM. It has adequate power to drive long deck screws and lag bolts into pressure-treated lumber. There are three LED lights that evenly light the work area and a two-handed chuck, which means you need to hold the chuck open to insert a bit. We wouldn't expect this impact driver to last forever with daily use, but it is a capable tool for the occasional user.

Kit includes: Impact driver, 1.5Ah battery, charger, and a soft tool bag.

There are four modes: soft, normal, power, and a self-tapping option hat starts slower and backs off as the fastener seats. Self-tapping mode is intended more for sheet-metal screws, but also works to get screws started in hard wood, easily. The contractor-grade tool also has an IP56 rating, which means it will resist intrusion by direct jets of water.
